The body falling, slipping, overreaching — physical comedy is the oldest form, older than language, and still the most reliable way to make a room laugh across all cultural lines. Nasreddin falls off his donkey in approximately one hundred recorded stories, and the fall never gets old because it is always the ego that hits the ground. The body's humiliation is funny because the body does not take it personally, and neither should the person inside it.
Each step builds on the last.
