Some friendships grow past the category of friendship into something for which there is not an adequate word — they become chosen kin, carrying the weight and the intimacy that the word 'family' is supposed to hold. These relationships are among the most significant a person can have, and they often receive less institutional support than biological relationships. They deserve to be named and honored as what they are.
