How to Give AI the Right Context for Better Care Help

AI gives better answers when you give it good context—the actual medical records, the specific situation, what you've already tried—because this grounds it in reality rather than forcing it to guess. Think of context as raw material: the more accurate and complete the material you feed in, the more useful and trustworthy the output becomes.

Why It Matters

Think of context like the difference between asking someone for directions while blindfolded versus pointing to your starting location, destination, and telling them about obstacles. Context is the information that helps AI understand your specific situation and give you answers that actually apply to you.

In caregiving, context means sharing details like:

  • Who you're caring for and their main health conditions
  • What medications they take and any allergies
  • Any mobility, memory, or communication challenges
  • Your current biggest struggle or challenge
  • What has or hasn't worked before

Here's a real example: If you ask AI 'How do I help someone with dementia eat healthy?' you'll get generic advice. But if you say 'My dad has mid-stage dementia, refuses most vegetables, loves sweets, and we've tried hiding veggies in sauces but he still refuses meals, what can I try?' you get advice tailored to your actual situation.

The more specific context you give, the more useful the AI becomes. It's like the difference between a doctor who's never met your family versus one who knows your mother's full medical history, living situation, and personality. One gives general advice; the other gives advice that actually works for your mom.

Think of building context like layering information. Start with the basics (who, what condition, current situation), then add what you've already tried, what hasn't worked, and what matters most to you. This helps AI understand not just the problem, but the real-world constraints you're working with.

One misconception: You shouldn't share personal health information with AI because of privacy. While privacy is real and important, sharing relevant details with mainstream AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT is generally safe for your own or your care recipient's information—you're not storing it on their servers permanently, and the companies have privacy policies. That said, check their terms if you're worried, and avoid extremely sensitive identifiers like social security numbers.

Try this: Write out 5-7 key facts about the person you're caring for (their conditions, what helps them, what doesn't, one daily challenge). Keep this as your 'context card.' Before asking AI for help, start your prompt with this context—paste it in—then ask your question. Notice how the answer becomes much more specific and useful.
