Authenticity as Becoming, Not Origin

True identity emerges through active engagement with ideas, relationships, and choices rather than from discovering original essence or genealogical truth.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana's authentic identity was not something she discovered within herself or inherited from others; it was something she actively constructed through intellectual work, relational engagement, writing, and choice. She became who she was through the practice of being a scholar, writer, and thinker. This concept challenges the assumption that adopted individuals must excavate an original authentic self located in their biological past or genetic inheritance. Instead, authenticity becomes an achievement—something created through ongoing engagement with ideas, communities, relationships, and creative work. From this perspective, the question is not "who was I really?" but "who am I becoming through my choices and engagements?" This framework liberates adopted individuals from the exhausting search for a lost original self and redirects energy toward active self-authorship in the present and future. Authenticity as becoming also honors the real transformations that occur when people take ownership of their identities: you become more authentically yourself through the practice of being yourself, through relationships of genuine intimacy, and through intellectual and creative engagement that reflects your actual values and interests.
