The Paradox of Authority and Autonomy

Sor Juana respected religious and intellectual authorities while refusing to surrender her judgment to them, navigating a paradox central to fairness in organized societies. She neither rebelled against all authority nor accepted unlimited deference; instead, she claimed the right to reasoned disagreement. Fairness requires resolving this paradox: societies need some coordinating authority, yet unlimited obedience enables tyranny. Sor Juana's approach—maintaining respect while defending autonomy—points toward solutions based on law and consent rather than mere force. True fairness emerges when authority is limited, explicitly authorized, and accountable; when individuals retain rights to conscience, thought, and dissent even toward legitimate authorities. This concept rejects both anarchic rejection of all order and totalitarian submission. Sor Juana demonstrated that people can honor institutions while insisting those institutions respect their dignity and rights.
