Autonomy and the Power to Resist

The concept that fairness requires the genuine freedom to refuse, question, and resist unjust demands—not just passive acceptance.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana famously refused obedience to church authorities, writing the 'Response to Sor Filotea' to defend her right to intellectual independence. She risked punishment to maintain autonomy. This concept distinguishes true fairness from mere compliance: a fair system protects people's power to resist, question, and refuse—especially when authorities demand silence or conformity. Systems that punish dissent, demand unquestioning obedience, or eliminate escape routes are inherently unfair, regardless of how benevolent they claim to be. Every society that achieved genuine justice protected the right to resist and question. Applied today, autonomy-as-resistance means protecting whistleblowers, safeguarding dissent, ensuring exit options from oppressive institutions, and preventing the isolation or punishment of those who refuse injustice.
