Claiming Space for Existence and Visibility

The deliberate practice of occupying intellectual, social, and physical space as an act of asserting your right to exist on your own terms.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana claimed space through her writing, her library, her intellectual contributions, and her presence in institutional structures designed to exclude her. She took up room. For non-binary and genderqueer people, claiming space is equally vital and similarly resisted. This concept addresses both external visibility and internal permission. Externally, it means speaking up in rooms where your identity may not be immediately recognized or welcomed, using language that reflects your reality, and insisting on your presence. Internally, it means granting yourself permission to take up physical and social space despite socialization that may teach gender-non-conforming people to shrink, apologize, or defer. Sor Juana's example shows that claiming space is not aggressive but necessary—a foundational act of self-determination. For genderqueer individuals, this might mean choosing how to dress in environments that expect binary presentation, using your pronouns consistently, or participating fully in communities even when you don't fit neat categories. Visibility, chosen strategically, is power.
