Consumption as a Mirror of Identity

The recognition that what we choose to buy reflects and constructs our values, beliefs, and sense of self.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana understood identity as something actively constructed through intellectual choices and positions taken. Similarly, ethical consumption requires recognizing that our purchases are declarations of who we are and what we value. Every purchase is a choice about identity: Do we support justice or perpetuate harm? Do we align our spending with our stated beliefs? Sor Juana fought against imposed identities based on gender and social position; ethical consumers similarly resist manufactured desires imposed by marketing. When we thoughtfully choose fair-trade products, support marginalized artisans, or refuse exploitative brands, we're asserting an identity rooted in justice. This transforms consumption from unconscious habit into deliberate self-definition, making every transaction an opportunity to authentically embody our values rather than simply follow patterns others have scripted for us.
