The Cost of Being the Only One

Analysis of the specific burdens placed on individuals who occupy rare intersectional positions, including representation, expectation, and isolation.

Juana
Why It Matters

As a woman scholar, a creole in a colonial hierarchy, and eventually a nun, Sor Juana occupied singular positions that isolated her while making her a symbol for others' aspirations. Contemporary intersectional spaces often celebrate having "the only" member of a marginalized group present, but this framing obscures the psychological, intellectual, and emotional labor demanded. Being the only woman in the physics department, the only disabled person in the firm, the only queer person in the family means constant visibility, pressure to represent your entire community, limited peer understanding, and vulnerability to isolation. This concept centers the cost of singularity, advocating for systemic change that creates critical mass rather than celebrating individual exceptions. It validates the exhaustion of being alone in one's intersectionality while building solidarity among those in similar positions.
