Economic Independence as Intellectual Precondition

The principle that genuine intellectual freedom requires economic security and independence from coercive control of resources and livelihood.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana's position as a nun provided economic security—a precondition that enabled her intellectual work despite institutional constraints. Yet even this security remained contingent on obedience, demonstrating how economic dependence enables intellectual control. Libertarian justice recognizes that intellectual freedom cannot exist in a vacuum; it requires material foundation. Someone dependent on an employer, institution, or patron for survival faces coercive pressure to conform their thoughts and conclusions to what authorities demand. True intellectual property rights become meaningless if the intellectual worker must surrender independent judgment to maintain livelihood. This concept asserts that economic independence—property sufficient to support oneself without coerced submission—constitutes a prerequisite for authentic intellectual freedom. Conversely, systems that concentrate control over economic resources enable intellectual monopolies. Libertarian justice must therefore protect the material conditions of intellectual autonomy: the right to earn, accumulate, and control property sufficient to maintain independence of thought and expression.
