Epistemic injustice occurs when someone's capacity to know is systematically denied or devalued based on their social position. Sor Juana experienced this as a woman and as indigenous—her theological insights dismissed, her intellectual capabilities questioned despite evidence. Children face systematic epistemic injustice: their observations are called 'cute,' their analysis dismissed as naive, their knowledge devalued because of their age. Yet children possess crucial knowledge about their own experiences, about patterns adults might miss, about creative solutions. Children's rights require epistemic justice—recognizing children as knowers whose insights merit serious consideration. This means creating conditions where children can contribute meaningfully to decisions affecting them, where their observations are investigated rather than dismissed, where their thinking is engaged rather than patronized. Schools, families, and institutions must shift from viewing children as knowledge recipients to recognizing them as knowledge producers. Following Sor Juana's model, epistemic justice for children means insisting that their voices contribute to understanding reality, that their reasoning is treated as reasoning, and that their intellectual dignity is honored. When children's epistemic contributions are validated, their sense of self as capable and worth listening to develops.
