Intersecting Hierarchies and Female Intellectual Authority

Mapping how gender, class, religion, and institutional power intersect to determine whose knowledge is valued and legitimized.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana was a woman in a patriarchal system, a creole in a colonial hierarchy, and a nun in an institutional structure with its own ranks. Each identity position shaped how her intellectual work was received and constrained. By examining her strategic navigation of these overlapping hierarchies, we develop vocabulary for understanding how intersecting systems of power operate in practice. Her education was permitted partly because of her exceptional talent and partly because convents needed educated women for specific roles. Her authority was recognized in certain domains while fiercely contested in others. Contemporary intersectional work demands this level of specificity: not treating oppression as a single axis but mapping how multiple systems interact to create unique constraints and possibilities for different people. Sor Juana's example teaches us to analyze power configurations rather than assume they operate uniformly across all identities.
