Institutional Critique from Within

The practice of challenging unjust systems while remaining embedded in them, using internal position to question authority and propose alternatives.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana worked within the Catholic Church and colonial structures while simultaneously questioning their assumptions about women's intellectual capacity, religious authority, and the proper use of learning. She didn't reject the institutions but critiqued them from within, using their own languages and frameworks against their limitations. In intersectional practice, many people find themselves needing to work within systems they recognize as harmful—a person of color in a racist institution, a woman in a patriarchal organization, a queer person in a heteronormative family business. This concept examines the possibilities and dangers of internal critique: how to maintain integrity and effectiveness while embedded in systems that don't serve you, how to identify which battles to fight and which to preserve energy for, how to build alliances with others in similar positions, and how to avoid either total co-optation or paralysis. Sor Juana's famous letter to the Bishop reveals this strategy—she defends women's intellectual work while appealing to religious authority, questions male privilege while respecting institutional hierarchy. This framework helps practitioners navigate the complex reality that complete exit often isn't possible or desirable, and that transformation sometimes requires inside work.
