Interconnection and Mutual Dependence

Recognizing that all beings exist in relationship and interdependence, making isolation and domination philosophically and ethically untenable.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana lived within systems of profound interdependence: she depended on institutional support to pursue her intellectual work, even as she critiqued institutional authority. She understood that human existence is relational, embedded in networks of social and spiritual connection. This insight extends naturally to ecological and biological reality: humans exist within networks of dependence with animals and nature. We breathe because of photosynthesis; we survive through complex ecological relationships; we are never self-sufficient. Yet industrial systems abstract away this interdependence, presenting animals as resources rather than relational partners. A Sor Juana-inspired ethics would begin with honest recognition of mutual dependence. We benefit from animal labor, ecology, and existence; they depend on our restraint and protection. This relationship creates obligation precisely because we are not separate. Just as Sor Juana's intellectual development depended on others' labor and support, our flourishing depends on ecological health and animal welfare. Recognizing this interconnection undermines justifications for unlimited exploitation, revealing instead a web of relationships that demand ethical care and reciprocal responsibility.
