Internalized homophobia

Internalized homophobia is the absorption and belief of negative messages about queerness, such that a person hates or rejects in themselves what a homophobic society taught them to despise. It operates as self-surveillance and self-punishment, often invisible even to the person experiencing it, and requires conscious excavation and grieving to dismantle.
