Justice as Internal Reckoning

Moving beyond shame and punishment toward genuine accountability, self-forgiveness, and restoring right relationship with oneself.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana grappled with questions of justice, conscience, and moral accountability within systems of power. In recovery, "justice" must include an internal dimension: facing honestly what addiction has cost you and others, taking genuine responsibility without drowning in shame, and actively working toward restoration. This differs from the punitive self-judgment that often accompanies addiction—"I deserve to suffer." True justice in recovery means acknowledging harm while also recognizing your own humanity and capacity for change. It involves making amends where possible, but also crucially, making amends to yourself: keeping commitments you make to yourself, treating yourself with respect, honoring your own needs. Sor Juana's philosophical approach to justice invites this internal reconciliation—not erasing the past but integrating it into a coherent ethical self moving forward.
