Justice Through Labor Solidarity

Recognizing consumption choices as expressions of solidarity with or complicity in systems of labor exploitation and economic justice.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana's commitment to justice and her sensitivity to hierarchies and inequalities illuminate ethical consumption as fundamentally a justice issue. Every product carries within it the labor, conditions, and dignity of those who made it. Choosing ethical consumption means recognizing this human reality and refusing complicity in exploitation. Labor solidarity means preferring fair-trade certifications, supporting worker-owned enterprises, and actively avoiding brands known for labor abuses. It means understanding that the lowest price often reflects the highest cost to someone else—the garment worker, the cocoa farmer, the factory laborer. Sor Juana herself advocated for the intellectual rights and dignity of those considered inferior; we extend this principle by honoring the rights and dignity of those whose invisible labor enables our consumption. This approach transforms ethical consumption from individual virtue into participation in a justice movement, where each purchase becomes a choice about what kind of world and what relationships we want to support through our economic participation.
