Justice as Right Relationship

Repairing harm and restoring trust through accountability not as punishment but as restoration of authentic connection and mutual dignity.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana's understanding of justice emphasized restoration of relationships and social order, not merely retribution. In recovery from addiction, the concept of justice becomes central: the person has harmed themselves and others, and recovery involves restoring right relationship. This differs from shame-based guilt, which says "I am bad and deserve suffering." Justice-oriented recovery says "I caused harm and I can respond with intention and accountability." The recovering person engages in practical repair: amending relationships, honoring commitments, demonstrating through sustained action that their values have shifted. This work is relational—it requires the willingness to be seen in one's failures and to earn trust anew. The concept connects recovery identity to community: one recovers not in isolation but through accountability to those affected by one's addiction. Justice becomes a practice rather than a verdict. By engaging authentically with the impact of their choices, the person develops a recovery identity grounded in dignity and responsibility, not self-flagellation. They become someone capable of right relationship—with themselves, with those they've harmed, and with their community.
