Knowledge as Spiritual Practice

The understanding that rigorous intellectual pursuit—study, philosophy, science, and learning—is itself a sacred practice and form of worship.

Juana
Why It Matters

For Sor Juana, learning was devotion. She pursued mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and theology not as secular alternatives to faith but as expressions of it. This concept reframes the relationship between doubt and belief: intellectual inquiry is not the enemy of spirituality but potentially its deepest expression. Someone moving from passive belief toward questioning often experiences this as leaving faith, when it may actually represent the maturation of faith into conscious understanding. Sor Juana's library and studies were her temple. This framework allows those in religious transition to honor the spiritual validity of intellectual seeking, whether it leads to reformed belief, agnosticism, or secular ethics grounded in the same values that once came from faith. Knowledge becomes the practice through which we encounter truth, and that encounter—whatever conclusions it reaches—remains fundamentally spiritual in nature, engaging our deepest questions about existence, meaning, and justice.
