Rawls and the veil of ignorance

Rawls imagined us choosing a society's basic rules while ignorant of our own place in it—our race, class, abilities, or luck—to reveal what principles we'd actually find fair. This thought experiment exposes how much of what we call justice is really self-interest dressed in principle, and whether we're truly willing to live by rules we'd accept from any position.
