She refused these binaries, insisting on the possibility of holding multiple commitments simultaneously. She was authentic precisely in not accepting the demand to simplify herself into coherence. You can honor your family while disagreeing with them. You can love your culture while critiquing its limitations. You can be embedded in institutional systems while maintaining critical distance. The refusal of false choice means developing the intellectual and emotional capacity to hold paradox, to live with tensions unresolved, to maintain multiple commitments without collapsing into contradiction. This is more demanding than choosing a side, but it produces a richer, more nuanced authenticity. Sor Juana teaches that the most authentic self is often the one that refuses simplification and inhabits complexity with integrity, acknowledging that some tensions are real and cannot be erased without loss.
