Refusing the Either/Or

Resisting binary thinking—sick/well, productive/worthless, mind/body—that forces false choices and denies complex lived reality.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana inhabited multiple identities simultaneously: nun and intellectual, obedient subject and questioner, woman and authority. She refused reduction to a single category. Chronic illness culture often demands binary thinking: you are either sick or well, either capable or incapable, either deserving of compassion or responsible for your condition. This concept invites refusal of these binaries. You are simultaneously well in some ways and ill in others. You have real capacity and real limitation. You are both vulnerable and strong. Your mind may be sharp while your body is failing. Sor Juana's example shows the power of holding complexity without resolution. This framework allows you to name truth without forced coherence: yes, I am ill, and yes, I am engaged in meaningful work. Yes, I am disabled, and yes, I am capable. The both/and stance honors lived reality in a way binaries cannot.
