The Right to Question Authority

Sor Juana's famous letter defending her right to study theology directly challenged ecclesiastical authority, asserting that questioning is not rebellion but intellectual honesty. This concept recognizes that rights and responsibilities form a reciprocal bond: the right to question carries the responsibility to question well—with evidence, clarity, and good faith. Yet the flip side demands that authorities hold themselves accountable to reasonable inquiry. In the framework of Responsibilities—the other side of rights, communities that protect the questioner's right must simultaneously require that questioners engage responsibly. Sor Juana modeled this balance: she questioned the Church not to destroy it but to purify it, using rigorous argument rather than recklessness. This teaches that defending intellectual freedom means defending both the liberty to ask and the obligation to ask seriously.
