The Right to Question Authority

Sor Juana's willingness to challenge ecclesiastical and patriarchal authority in seventeenth-century Mexico demonstrated a principle every just society must protect: the right to ask difficult questions. Fairness cannot exist where inquiry itself is forbidden. She risked her reputation and safety by defending women's capacity for theological and philosophical thought against institutional resistance. Throughout history, civilizations that prohibited questioning stagnated, while those that protected dissent flourished intellectually and morally. The Periagoge concept here invites reflection on how we create spaces where people can challenge injustice, bad ideas, and entrenched power without fear of retaliation. True fairness requires protecting the questioner as much as protecting institutions.
