The Right to Question Our Desires

Examining the origins and validity of our consumption desires rather than accepting them as natural or inevitable.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana's life was a continuous interrogation of imposed expectations—what women should want, what bodies should do, what minds should pursue. This concept applies her critical method to modern consumption. We inherit desires through culture, marketing, family patterns, and social aspiration; rarely do we examine whether these desires truly serve us or reflect our authentic values. Ethical consumption requires the courage to ask: Why do I want this? Who benefits from my wanting this? Is this desire mine or implanted? This questioning isn't about guilt or deprivation—it's about reclaiming authorship of our own desires. Sor Juana teaches that the examined desire is the free desire. By subjecting our consumption impulses to the same intellectual rigor she applied to theology and philosophy, we distinguish between authentic needs and manufactured wants, purchasing with integrity rather than compulsion.
