Social capital

Social capital—the networks, trust, and mutual obligation that exist within and between groups—determines who gets access to jobs, loans, information, and power, often more decisively than individual merit. It's inherited and compounded: those born into connected communities accumulate advantage effortlessly, while those outside these networks face locked doors that look like neutral barriers.
