The Right to Solitude and Inner Life

Claiming protected space for private intellectual and spiritual work as essential to cisgender identity authentically lived.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana's cell became her sanctuary—a place where she could think, write, study, and develop her inner intellectual and spiritual life away from constant scrutiny and demands. This concept recognizes that cisgender identity fully inhabited requires solitude, interiority, and the right to an unmonitored inner life. Historically, assigned-female cisgender people have been expected to be emotionally available, constantly responsive to others' needs, and transparent in their thoughts and feelings. Claiming the right to solitude—to close the door, to have thoughts no one else owns or directs—becomes an act of identity reclamation. This framework asks: do you have protected space for your inner life? Are your thoughts, beliefs, and private reflections truly yours, or do others claim rights to them? How does your cisgender identity make you vulnerable to intrusion? Building justice means protecting the right to solitude as essential to human dignity, especially for those whose identity comes with expectations of perpetual emotional labor and availability.
