Strategic Silence and Coded Speech

Sor Juana's later works became increasingly coded and defensive; she used religious metaphor and elaborate wordplay to express critiques that couldn't be stated plainly without inviting censure or punishment. Strategic silence is not passivity—it's a calculated choice made when the cost of visibility is too high. In intersectional practice, this recognizes that marginalized people often cannot afford the luxury of complete transparency. A queer person in a hostile environment, a worker afraid of deportation, a person with a stigmatized illness, or a Black professional in a white space must constantly calculate what can be said, to whom, and in what register. Understanding strategic silence means honoring the intelligence and survival wisdom of those who know when speaking openly would invite harm. It also means recognizing the emotional and cognitive labor this requires, and creating spaces where people can eventually feel safe enough to move beyond coded speech toward authentic expression.
