Writing the Body Into Existence

Using language, expression, and creative work to assert physical presence and transform bodily self-concept from invisible to undeniable.

Juana
Why It Matters

Sor Juana wrote brilliantly, creating works that claimed intellectual and creative legitimacy for a body deemed marginal. Her writing was an assertion of existence: I think, therefore I am. Applied to physical self-concept, this concept invites you to express your bodily reality through language, art, or creative work. When you write about, photograph, dance, paint, or speak about your body—your actual experience, not idealized versions—you assert its reality and dignity. Marginalized bodies are often rendered invisible or spoken about only in clinical, judgmental, or fetishized terms. Your own expression counters this. Writing your body into existence means claiming narrative authority over your own embodied life. What is your experience? What does your body need? What has it survived? By expressing this through your chosen medium, you make your physical reality undeniable. This expression doesn't require perfect form or wide audience; it requires honesty. The act of articulating your embodied experience—in any medium—transforms your relationship to your body from passive endurance to active presence. You exist. Your body matters. Your voice proves it.
