Flowing Against the Current of Algorithmic Time

Understanding how algorithms create artificial urgency and scarcity, and flowing instead with natural rhythms that reduce FOMO's grip.

Laozi
Why It Matters

The Taoist sage observes water: it flows downward without resistance, yet carves through stone. Algorithms deliberately create artificial scarcity and urgency—limited-time offers, fleeting stories, trending moments—to make your natural rhythm seem inadequate. This manufactured current pushes you against your actual capacity and attention span. Laozi would recognize this as forcing the river. True flow requires aligning with your actual nature and the actual rhythms of meaningful activity: deep work, relationship, rest. FOMO amplifies when you accept the algorithm's artificial timeline. By consciously establishing your own rhythms—checking messages at specific times, engaging with content intentionally rather than reactively—you flow with reality rather than the algorithm's fiction. This isn't rigid discipline but responsive alignment with how human flourishing actually occurs.
