Ancestral Hollowness: Emptying to Receive

Kong, often translated as emptiness or void, is not nihilism in Taoism; it is the fertile ground from which all things arise. A cup must be empty to hold water; a mind full of certainty cannot receive wisdom. When you are full of your own narratives about who you are, who your ancestors were, and what you must become, there is no space for ancestral presence to move in its own way. The practice of ancestral hollowness means gradually releasing the fixed ideas about your family: your parents' definitions of you, your inherited role, your family story's conclusions about your destiny. This is not dissociation but openness. Through meditation, through questioning rigid beliefs, through letting go of the need to be right about your history, you create kong—an empty space where ancestral energy can flow without being filtered through your defenses. In this emptiness, you may encounter your ancestors as they are, not as you needed them to be. You may receive wisdom that contradicts your expectations. You may find that what you thought was your greatest wound was actually your greatest teacher. Ancestral hollowness is not passivity; it is the highest form of receptivity.
