Using breath as an anchor that naturally releases into formlessness, mirroring the physiological dissolution during near-death experiences.
The breath serves in Taoist practice as both physiological anchor and gateway to the infinite. Breath moves between being and non-being: each exhale releases form into emptiness, each inhale draws form from emptiness. In near-death states, breathing often ceases, becomes irregular, or transforms into non-ordinary patterns. By practicing breath awareness—particularly the pause between exhalation and inhalation where existence momentarily suspends—the consciousness learns the rhythm of its own dissolution and return. Following the breath beyond ordinary respiration means recognizing that consciousness itself breathes: expansion and contraction, manifestation and dissolution. When the body's breath ceases during near-death, consciousness continues this fundamental pulsation at deeper levels. This practice trains the awareness to find continuity within apparent discontinuity, to recognize that what seems like ending is simply a transition in the breath-rhythm of being.
