Cycles of Transparency and Opacity

Understanding that total transparency and total secrecy both contain seeds of their opposites; knowing when each serves activism.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Laozi teaches that opposites generate each other: light creates shadow, movement creates stillness, revealing creates concealment. In technology activism, this wisdom applies to the transparency vs. privacy debate. Movements that demand total transparency of corporations while protecting their own communications, or vice versa, fail to understand this dynamic. Instead, wise activists recognize that transparency and opacity exist in cycles and relationship. Complete transparency eliminates strategy; complete secrecy eliminates accountability and community trust. The skill lies in understanding context: when to operate transparently for accountability, when to operate opaquely for protection, and how these phases cycle. Open-source code with encrypted communication channels, public activism with protected organizing, community transparency with security against infiltration—these blend both principles. This also means recognizing that your opponent's opacity creates vulnerability; their need for secrecy is their weakness. Conversely, your community's transparency generates trust. The Taoist activist develops sensitivity to when the pendulum needs to swing toward revelation and when toward concealment, using both strategically and ethically. Balance and rhythm matter more than absolute positions.
