Holding Emptiness for Collective Becoming

Creating spaciousness in meetings and timekeeping—literal silence, metaphorical openness—where community can become rather than merely execute.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Taoism emphasizes emptiness not as lack but as potential: the usefulness of a cup lies in its emptiness, of a room in its open space. This emptiness is not nihilistic void but pregnant possibility. In ubuntu time, emptiness means protected space where the community has not yet decided, not yet fully formed, not yet committed—space for becoming. Many Western meetings are packed with content, speaking, predetermined outcomes; this leaves no room for genuine collective emergence. By contrast, Taoist and ubuntu wisdom honors silence, pauses, unscheduled time as essential to authentic gathering. When facilitators fill every moment, when agendas leave no breathing room, communities lose touch with their own deepest knowing. Laozi teaches that emptiness contains infinite potential; fullness constrains it. For relational communities, holding emptiness means: ensuring extended silence in circles, leaving agenda space unspecified, resisting the urge to fill pauses, trusting that community wisdom emerges in open space. This practice feels countercultural in efficiency-driven contexts, but communities that protect emptiness report that decisions made from that spaciousness carry more authority and align more deeply with collective values.
