Empty Space and Information Density

Traditional Chinese painting leaves much blank space, trusting viewers to complete meaning through their own imagination. Laozi teaches that utility comes from emptiness: a cup's value is in its hollow center, not its clay. Contemporary algorithmic feeds reject emptiness, continuously filling every space with new content, creating attention scarcity and cognitive exhaustion. A Taoist approach to algorithmic politics would deliberately architect emptiness—recommending breaks, creating gaps, leaving silence between communications. This seems economically foolish in engagement-maximization terms, yet it aligns with how human minds actually process political information. Research in learning science shows that spacing, silence, and recovery periods improve retention and understanding far more than continuous stimulation. An algorithmic feed that half-fills the screen invites contemplation. One that respects your existing beliefs rather than constantly challenging them paradoxically makes you more open to genuinely new ideas—because they arrive during moments of cognitive rest. This represents a fundamental inversion: emptiness becomes fullness, silence becomes eloquence, scarcity of information enables wisdom rather than ignorance.
