Flow as Natural Attention State

Understanding flow as the default attention mode when obstacles are removed and conditions align with purpose.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Laozi teaches that the Tao naturally flows—and so does attention when properly aligned. Modern psychology calls this flow state, but the Taoist perspective reveals it's not rare or forced; it's the natural result of removing friction. When you're engaged in work that matches your skill level, in an environment without interruption, pursuing something meaningful, attention flows without effort. The scarcity narrative suggests we must ration limited attention, but Taoist thought suggests abundance emerges through alignment. This means attention problems often point to misalignment: wrong work, wrong environment, wrong values. Rather than forcing focus through techniques, examine whether your activities align with your nature. Flow isn't an achievement you force but a recognition of when you're in right relationship with what you're doing. Attention stops feeling scarce when you're doing what you should be doing.
