Instead of algorithmic suppression (the hammer), mirror governance uses algorithmic revelation. A feed algorithm might show users statistics about their own filter bubble, reflecting back their actual information diet without restricting choice. Recommendation systems might highlight whose voices they're ignoring despite stated commitment to diversity. Moderation systems might show communities the proportional effects of their enforcement, enabling collective recognition of whether norms match values. This approach assumes communities want alignment between values and practices but lack feedback revealing misalignment. The political power lies in moving from external control toward internal alignment. Mirror-based algorithmic governance requires different design: algorithms optimized for clarity rather than persuasion, transparency about behavioral patterns rather than behavioral modification, and metrics measuring self-awareness rather than compliance. The risk and opportunity lies in community response—when shown mirrors, some communities will align practices with values, while others will double down on acknowledged choices. This reveals authentic preferences more honestly than systems attempting to force compliance.
