The Paradox of Attention

Laozi's insight that seeking attention creates its loss; the inverse relationship between chasing presence and actually being present.

Laozi
Why It Matters

The Taoist sage understands paradox as the deepest truth: the more you pursue something, the further it flees. Digital anxiety thrives on this paradox—the more you chase connection through constant checking, the more fragmented your actual attention becomes. Laozi points to the inverse law: presence arrives when you stop grasping for it. FOMO is ultimately the anxiety of seeking presence while destroying the very conditions for it. By acknowledging this paradox rather than fighting it, you begin to see that the content you fear missing is often less valuable than the moment you're missing it in. The practice is to catch yourself mid-reach for your phone and notice the paradox: this action promises presence but delivers distraction. In that noticing, real attention becomes possible.
