Presence as Radical Technology

Positioning parental presence and genuine attention as the most powerful technology available, creating psychological security that makes children less vulnerable to digital escapism.

Laozi
Why It Matters

In the Taoist view, presence is not passive but an active, generative force. A parent fully present with a child—not checking their phone, genuinely listening, engaging without agenda—provides something no technology can replicate: the felt sense of mattering to another consciousness. Children drawn obsessively to screens often seek what presence provides: attention, validation, belonging. When this is available from caregivers, screens become less compelling. Conversely, a child in a home of distracted adults—each absorbed in devices—experiences profound loneliness that screens paradoxically both worsen and soothe. Laozi would recognize that the solution to technology problems isn't more restriction but more genuine human connection. Parents who prioritize unplugged family time, shared meals, unhurried conversations—what might seem simple—actually deploy the most powerful technology available: the neurological and psychological effects of secure attachment and witnessed existence. This reframes the technology debate from 'how do we limit screens?' to 'how do we deepen presence?' The latter question opens toward solutions that heal rather than merely restrict.
