The Paradox of Presence Through Absence

Being more meaningfully present to those around you by being strategically absent from digital spheres.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Taoist paradox teaches that gaining something requires releasing its opposite. FOMO suggests presence means constant availability across all platforms. But Laozi understood that true presence—the kind that matters—requires focused absence elsewhere. When you're physically with loved ones while mentally monitored by notifications, you're absent from what's real. By being deliberately unavailable digitally during specific times, you become radically present in physical space. This creates a paradoxical shift: others feel truly seen, conversations deepen, and the anxiety of digital presence dissolves because you've committed to one form of presence at a time. The practice teaches that you cannot be fully present everywhere—and that's not a failure but the nature of embodied life. FOMO feeds on the illusion of omnipresence; accepting temporal and spatial limits actually enhances the presence that matters most.
