Laozi repeatedly praised simplicity and warned against complexity's burdens: 'In the pursuit of the Tao, every day something is dropped.' Contemporary BCIs often violate this principle through over-engineering: hundreds of electrodes, baroque algorithms, interface complexity that requires extensive user training. A Taoist BCI philosophy asks: what is the absolute minimum necessary for meaningful function? Can we achieve 80% of performance with 20% of complexity? This isn't mere engineering efficiency but a spiritual principle—excessive complexity obscures the essential relationship between user intention and system response. Paradoxically, minimalist BCIs often outperform complex ones: fewer electrodes mean fewer noise sources and simpler adaptation; simpler algorithms prove more robust across users; reduced training burden means faster skill acquisition and broader accessibility. The minimalist approach also embodies Taoist ethics: simpler systems require fewer resources, less maintenance, lower cost, and greater sustainability. They also preserve more user agency and comprehension—users understand and can troubleshoot simple systems whereas complex ones become black boxes. A truly advanced BCI might require remarkably little hardware or computation, achieving elegance through profound understanding of neural principles rather than brute-force complexity. Laozi's 'simplicity is the ultimate sophistication' applies directly to twenty-first century neurotechnology.
