Reversal and the Inverted Feed Algorithm

Subverting algorithmic logic by intentionally following what doesn't trigger engagement addiction.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Laozi's concept of reversal—that extremes contain their opposites—applies directly to algorithms. Feeds are designed to escalate engagement through emotional arousal. FOMO is engineered: the algorithm shows you what makes you anxious about missing out, creating the very lack it promises to remedy. Reversal means inverting your feed deliberately: follow accounts that calm rather than agitate, seek content that teaches absence of need rather than manufactured need, curate for wisdom instead of novelty. This directly contradicts algorithmic incentive, making you less profitable but vastly less anxious. The paradox: by following what doesn't compel constant return, you paradoxically become more engaged with content that nourishes rather than depletes. Over time, your feed becomes a teacher of non-attachment rather than a FOMO machine, and the platform becomes a tool rather than a master.
