Paradoxically, accepting limitation makes you stronger; yielding to death's reality dissolves the brittleness of denial and control.
Laozi's great reversal: the soft overcomes the hard, weakness flows through strength. Applied to mortality, this means accepting your finitude makes you unbreakable in spirit. The person defending against death-awareness exhausts themselves in a losing battle. The person who accepts and integrates mortality becomes psychologically supple. Memento mori practice is not defeatism but strategic wisdom—you stop expending energy on the impossible (endless life) and redirect it toward what remains possible (meaningful living). Like water finding cracks in stone, acceptance flows where denial cannot. This reversal also dissolves the fear that animates denial: naming death clearly removes its power to ambush you through unconscious dread. You stand firmer when rooted in truth than when balanced on the tower of illusion. The Taoist sage bends with time's motion and cannot be broken by what she expected all along.
