Reverse Metrics: Measuring What Matters

Inverting traditional success metrics by measuring contemplative impact through non-attachment, insight frequency, and reduced digital dependency rather than engagement.

Why It Matters

Conventional apps measure success through engagement metrics: time spent, daily active users, retention rates. These metrics measure addiction, not benefit. Buddhist contemplative computing inverts this logic: success means practitioners spend less time in-app while developing deeper practice. The goal is eventual freedom from the platform. Reverse metrics align with Laozi's wisdom: the sage accomplishes much by doing little, and the ultimate utility is knowing when to stop. Measure instead: practitioners' reported insight quality, decreased anxiety, improved off-screen attention, genuine life transformation. Track not how often users open the app, but whether they progress beyond needing it. Does the platform serve liberation or dependence? Are practitioners becoming more or less attached to their devices? These questions require courage to ask, because they contradict growth-at-all-costs thinking. Yet they honor the actual purpose of Buddhist contemplative computing: reducing suffering, not increasing screen time. Implementation might include brief reflection prompts asking whether the app serves their practice, open acknowledgment that reduced usage indicates success, and transparent metrics showing progress toward practice independence.
