The Shadow of the Algorithm

Laozi recognized that all things contain shadow and light, yin and yang, and that attempting to eliminate shadow only drives it deeper underground. Algorithms present a modern parallel: they possess internal logic that often contradicts their stated purpose. A platform designed to connect people creates loneliness; a recommendation system meant to serve users manipulates them; a moderation algorithm meant to prevent harm often amplifies marginalized voices' silence. Activists must understand this shadow dimension rather than simply fighting algorithms head-on. This requires studying how algorithms actually function, not how their creators claim they function. It means recognizing that algorithms have emergent behaviors, unintended consequences, and paths of least resistance just like natural systems. The Taoist approach combines acceptance of this shadow nature with subtle intervention. Rather than demanding algorithms be transparent or fair—often impossible technical goals—activists work with the shadow, understanding how biases can be exposed, how systems can be subverted, how technical properties can be leveraged. This represents neither surrender nor naive confidence in technical fixes. Instead, it embodies clear-eyed recognition of algorithmic systems as complex entities with their own nature, requiring wisdom rather than willful control to navigate.
