Acknowledging that the aspects of yourself you most fear losing—ego, reputation, control—are already dying moment by moment.
Death frightens us partly because we cling to identity: accomplishments, status, the version of ourselves we've constructed. But Taoist awareness reveals that this 'self' is already dissolving. Each moment, cells die, thoughts vanish, memories fade. The person you were yesterday is gone. This shadow self—the defended ego—is already experiencing continuous death. Memento mori becomes psychologically gentler when you realize you're not waiting for an alien disaster but completing a process already underway. The Stoic who rehearses mortality can deepen the practice: notice right now what's dying—comfort, familiar patterns, the person you thought you'd be. This shadow death is not tragedy but liberation. By releasing the ego-self gradually, consciously, through mindfulness, you practice the great release. By the time physical death arrives, the difficult part—surrendering the illusion of permanent self—is already complete.
