Shi: Positioning Momentum

The Taoist concept of shi (strategic advantage or momentum) showing how beginning creates the force field needed for flow.

Laozi
Why It Matters

Shi, meaning positioning or strategic momentum, describes how martial artists and strategists understand that initial placement and movement create conditions for effortless flow. Laozi applied this to all endeavors: the Tao doesn't force outcomes; it establishes conditions where outcomes naturally follow. When starting before ready, you create shi—you position yourself in the game rather than on the sidelines. Initial momentum, even tentative momentum, generates reactive forces and opportunities that weren't visible before you began. A ball rolling downhill gains speed not from the first push being perfect, but from gravity and terrain responding to the initial movement. Starting before ready establishes shi: you enter the field, and the system's own dynamics begin supporting your trajectory. Readiness becomes a consequence of momentum, not its prerequisite.
