One of Laozi's most profound teachings is that the soft overcomes the hard. Water is soft yet carves stone. The newborn is soft yet flexible; the corpse is hard yet rigid. When we resist mortality with rigidity—through obsessive control, denial, or desperate accumulation—we become brittle, fragile. The very hardness meant to protect us actually makes us vulnerable. The ego, in its fear of death, hardens: it grasps for permanence, builds elaborate defenses, becomes controlling and brittle. Memento mori, properly practiced through a Taoist lens, softens us. We yield to what we cannot control. We accept limitation. And this softening, counterintuitively, makes us more resilient. A person who has accepted death is harder to break because they have nothing left to defend. They move like water, adapting to circumstances. They are genuinely kind because they no longer need to prove their worth. This is the paradox: by accepting death (the ultimate hardness) through softness, we become unbreakable.
