Real connection occurs in what is not said, not posted, not performed—the implicit space where true meeting becomes possible.
Laozi writes that usefulness comes from what is not there: a room's usefulness comes from its emptiness, a cup's from its hollow. Similarly, real human connection exists not in what is expressed but in the space between expressions—in what is understood without words, felt without performance, shared in silence. Social media inverts this: connection becomes identical with expression. If you didn't post it, it didn't happen. If it's not shared, it's not real. This collapses the space between into the content itself, leaving nothing but surface. Yet the deepest meeting happens in what cannot be posted: a glance of true recognition, the comfort of presence without small talk, the knowing that someone understands without explanation. Loneliness intensifies because we're starving for this implicit space while feeding on its opposite. Healing involves cultivating platforms and relationships where the unspoken matters more than the posted, where presence matters more than performance. This can happen even with technology if we use it to gesture toward meetings that happen elsewhere—in conversation, shared silence, or simply being known beyond what words can capture. The space between is where you are most truly met.
