Laozi observes that those who force themselves break, while those who yield endure. Applied to technology and activism, this means designing organizing structures with explicit rest cycles, attention fluctuation, and regeneration periods. Indigenous wisdom teaches that land requires fallow seasons; similarly, movements require periods of integration, relationship repair, and infrastructure maintenance between high-intensity campaigns. Digital activists especially need this: constant notifications create constant availability expectations; burnout becomes normalized as heroism. Instead, movements could adopt practices like: seasons of visibility and invisibility, campaigns with defined endpoints, mandatory rest, shared work rotation, and explicit acknowledgment that sustainability requires cycling rather than constant output. This paradoxically increases effectiveness because people return from rest with renewed creativity and commitment. The Taoist sage paces themselves for the long journey, not the sprint. Movements embracing cycling outlast those demanding perpetual sacrifice.
